Hello Meaford Soap Box Derby Drivers, Sponsors, Supporters and Fans
There have been many rumors going on about the Meaford Soap Box Derby and we would like to take a moment to clarify a few things.
There will be no 2017 Meaford Soap Box Derby, that is correct. It was a very hard decision that we have had to make and we're still disappointed. We love planning it and spending the day with all of you. We are sorry to the people it had upset.
Many people think this event is put on by the Town of Meaford but it has come to some people's attention that is not correct. The Meaford Soap Box Derby is put on by members of the community and is sponsored by donations from businesses in the area and surrounding areas. Funds are not provided by the Town of Meaford.
Since we are an independent event and not covered under the Town of Meaford Canada Day events we must provide our own insurance. To have our insurance it requires one of our team members to be on site all day, he is currently recovering from an illness and feel like that would be a lot to ask of him at this time. We have recently made changes to allow the responsibility to moved to a different team member .
The Canada Day events this year will be held in the Market Square parking lot. The Town has worked very hard and has many great events planned. One event being live bands playing all day, we feel this is great. It's wonderful to support our local talent. But with bands playing all day it limits us from playing music as well as our MC talking to the drivers, calling on the drivers that are next up to race, thanking our sponsors as well as communicating with the timers at the bottom of the hill so they know who the next drivers and car numbers are and of course announcing the prize and trophy winners are at the end of the day. This is a large part of our event.
Because we are an independent event we are required to submit an Event Request Form. We always ask for road closed signs, pylons, candles, garbage bins and recycling bins. With so many Town events going on our requests might not be filled and we understand that the Town would require them for their events first.
Our event always gives out free food and drinks to everyone that comes by. We were contacted and told it would be un-acceptable for us to hand out food and drinks this year as there will be vendors present to sell their food and drinks. Vendors that are trying to make money. We understand their concerns and don't want to cause problems with the vendors.
It was suggested that we just moved our event to the next day. Unfortunately, that doesn't work with some team members schedules.
We have heard we are moving our event to St. Vincent Street hill, that is not correct. We have also heard we are moving it to Nelson Street hill, also not correct but it was held there many, many years ago.
We have heard we are moving our event to a different Town, also not correct.
Please don't believe everything you hear.
The Town of Meaford will be having many great events happening Canada Day and we encourage you to take the time to enjoy them..
We have enjoyed being a part of the Canada Day celebrations beginning with being welcomed by Shirley Keavney when it was organized by the BIA. Switching to Amber Knott with the Town of Meaford and next year we look forward to working with Stephen Murray from the Town of Meaford.
Have a wonderful, safe, happy, fun filled weekend celebrating Canada's 150.
Thanks again to everyone for all your support. Look forward to seeing you in 2018
